City and Guilds Register of Qualified Memorial Fixers Qualification Requirements
British Standard 8415:2005+A2:2012 states:
‘It has been assumed in the drafting of this specification that the selection of components together with the design and construction of the monuments is entrusted to appropriately qualified and experienced persons, and the execution of the work is carried out under the direction of appropriately qualified supervisors’.
‘This British Standard calls for the use of procedures that may be injurious to health if adequate precautions are not taken. It refers only to technical suitability and does not absolve the user from legal obligations relating to health and safety at any stage. In particular attention is drawn to risks involving the lifting of components and equipment and those involved should be aware of this’.
NAMM Advice: Due to the potential for serious harm to the fixer and the understanding of different stone requirements to ensure the safe erection of memorials; only experienced masons with instruction in manual handling ‘safe systems of work’ when moving memorials should be allowed to erect memorials.
NPTC City and Guilds Lawn Memorial Fixer Course Requirements:
- The classroom/theory based part of the course can be attended by apprentices or non-experienced Masons.
- The City and Guilds RQMF Qualification is achieved by a successful C&G RQMF Assessment:
» To comply with BS8415; the City and Guilds RQMF Fixing Qualification is specifically designed for experienced Memorial Fixers only who have previously been instructed in all of the Manual Handling ‘Safe Systems of Work’ associated with the movement of Memorials. Fixers also require experience working with stone and understand the details of working with different types of stone to ensure correct and safe compliance to BS8415 (NAMM CoWP)
» To carry out the C&G Assessment; students are not required to undertake the C&G RQMF Training Course (although it is strongly advised).
» Non NAMM members and fixers who’s company is not already on the Register of Qualified Memorial Fixers must have 2 years’ experience of fixing memorials and obtain references from a NAMM member or an RQMF City and Guilds registered company in their area who must ensure that they are trained in and aware of all Manual Handling ‘Safe Systems of Work’ relating to memorials, AND one local Burial Authority to say they have fixed memorials in their Burial Grounds and there have been no issues.
If anyone feels that they would like to appeal this criteria due to personal circumstance they can write to the RQMF Administration Committee explaining the reasons.
NAMM also recommends that all NAMM accredited Ground Anchors are fitted by Qualified Memorial Fixers’ and MUST be fitted to Manufacturer’s instructions.
