The Memorial Awareness
Board has published “Defining Grave Spaces” aimed to encourage cemetery
managers to allow kerbsets. MAB feels that it is vital that Burial
Authorities should provide as wide a range of memorials as possible
if it is to better satisfy the needs of the bereaved.
Kerbsets mark out and protect the area of the grave and allow it to be planted and cared for. However many
Burial Authorities do not allow kerbsets on the basis that they are difficult to maintain.
Kerbsets do not necessarily make maintenance more difficult. There are a number of ways in which grass can be
effectively kept at bay between kerbsets. The use of strimmers is one whilst an alternative method is to replace
the grass between memorials with materials such as gravel or woodchip. In this way, grounds staff only have a small
central strip of grass to mow.
